Râșnov Fortress (Cetatea Râșnov, German: Rosenauer Burg, Hungarian: Barcarozsnyó) is a significant landmark and historic monument in Transylvania and Burzenland regions (Țara Bârsei | Barcaság).
Râșnov Fortress dates back over 700 years and has a long history as a successful strategic defense point. Situated on steep hill surrounded by thick forests, 650 feet above the small town of Rasnov, it was built as part of a defence system for the Transylvanian villages exposed to outside invasions. The medieval fortress of today was built by the Saxon community in the 14th century. Today, it is one of the best-kept ruins of its kind in all of Romania.
It can be approached by foot or you can choose to use the new cable car, which takes visitors from the base of the hill to the fortress. From the top, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside, hills and mountains.
